In this article, we'll discuss what SoundCloud is, what exactly the platform provides, and whether or not you'll have to take your wallet out of your pocket to take advantage of it.
What is SoundCloud?
SoundCloud is an online audio distribution platform founded in 2007 by Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss. They met while studying at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, a university known to be one of the best schools in the world for computer science. After bonding over a mutual love for music, they decided they wanted to create something like Flickr or WordPress but for audio.
What started out as a small community of artists to promote their audio offerings has grown into a strong choice for independent musicians to really market themselves. Post Malone, Chance the Rapper and Kehlani are just a few mainstream music artists who started their careers on SoundCloud.
It is now a streaming service, a distribution platform for new and future artists, and an online community for fans. But at its core, it is all about letting you discover and listen to new music.
At the time of writing, there are over 175 million registered SoundCloud users and over 200 million downloaded tracks. You can access it on the desktop website and on the mobile app.
The company claims that 350 million people experience its audio files on the web and mobile devices each month, and 175 million of them click play at least once. Despite this huge following, however, its earnings have been miniscule to date, as the company has only made money from the fees it charges some of its most active vendors. According to public filings in Britain, where SoundCloud has an office, he had around $ 13 million in revenue and $ 20 million in net losses in 2012, the most recent year for which his accounts are available.

Is SoundCloud free?
Listening to music on SoundCloud online is completely free and you don't even need to create an account to do so. However, to download and comment on the songs, you will need to register. Free users have a download limit of three hours of audio, and the file size cannot exceed 4 GB. In addition, a track created by a free user can only be downloaded a maximum of 100 times.
